ST ANDREW THE PATRON SAINT OF SCOTLAND, ROMANIA, RUSSIA, AND GREECE is now recognised by the Scottish Government via the initial proposal by independent Member of the Scottish Parliament Dennis Canavan in 2003 - Mr Canavan's proposal was at first rejected but there is little doubt that his initiative started the ball rolling enough that the then First Minister, Jack McConnell believed in recognising the importance of St Andrew's day and a compromise to Mr Canavan's original Bill was made. Scotland has now recognised that since 2006 St Andrew's day is an official bank holiday.
The Scottish Government regulations say that the "Flag of Scotland", (The Saltire") will be on each flagpole on St Andrew's Day and if the building flying "The Saltire" has another flagpole then you may also see the Union Jack, if the building has only one flagpole then the Union Jack will be removed and replaced with the "Flag of Scotland", (The Saltire).
It should be noted that the British Army refuses to fly the "Flag of Scotland" on St Andrew's Day above Edinburgh Castle, yet in their recruitment literature the Union Jack is replaced by the "Saltire", this has been suggested as hypocritical by the Scottish Government.

It's official Homecoming Scotland is to be reborn in 2014.

In 2014 the eyes of the world will be on Scotland as the Commonwealth Games comes to Glasgow and Gleneagles hosts the Ryder Cup and Scots at home and abroad mark the anniversary of Bannockburn.

First Minister of Scottish Parliament has just announced today that Scotland would celebrate in the year of the greatest golf Championship, the Ryder Cup when Scotland hosts it in 2014.

As one of the events champions of last years events you can trust we will be even better prepared for this 2014 event.

THE SCOTTISH LANGUAGE.

The Scottish language is World famous in every country known to man. The earliest story I can recall as a child was about a man who's roots are reputed to descend from the highland Livingstones.
I write about the famous Dr David Livingstone who as well as being one of Scotland's original explorers being from the central belt, ie; Blantyre, Lanarkshire his World famous meeting with Sir Henry Morton Stanley (born:John Rowlands) a Welshman who also became famous for his African explorations and searching the jungle for Dr Livingstone, Sir Henry is supposedly have uttered the statement;
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
Although the authenticity of this now famous greeting is in doubt it seems likely the Scottish language would not have been mistaken, in exactly the same way a Scotsman can tell at once the lilt or dialect of the Welsh language.
Although Scotland's population is over 5 million the visitor to Scotland would be amazed at the differences in the Scottish regional dialects such as Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dumfries to name a few and the visitor should also note that the Scottish regional dialects should not be confused with English regional dialects which are completely different and causes great confusion among those visiting Scotland for the first time.
The Scottish language we all know today comes originally from Gaelic, German, Scandinavian, Angles and Northern Anglo-Saxon and described as; Scots is the traditional Germanic language of Lowland Scotland and the Northern Isles.
For many years and in some quarters today the Scots language is denigrated as bad English or slang which thankfully today recognised academic language experts will tell you is complete and utter nonsense as the two are completely different languages. Take for example English language speaking countries which all have different local,regional,national and international English dialects such as; Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A., Canada, Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland etc...
The majority of listeners will know instantly the difference between an American accent and a Scottish accent although both languages are English and both will understand each other, likewise the rest of these English speaking countries.
So the next time you ask a Scotsman, "speak English", you'll completely understand that he can no longer speak English than you yourself can speak Scottish - it's a language and dialect thing!

Mr Crawford won the top prize for his biography of Burns

A biography of Robert Burns has won the £10,000 book of the year prize at the 2009 Saltire Society Literary Awards.

Robert Crawford won the award for his book The Bard, against stiff competition from authors AL Kennedy and Janice Galloway.

Other awards went to a history of Scottish philosophy, a biography of John Muir and the Historical Thesaurus of the English dictionary.

The award ceremony was held in Edinburgh on Monday.

The awards were presented by Culture Minister Michael Russell, who said: "It is great to see the prestigious Saltire Society Literary Awards fully involved with the Homecoming Scotland Finale celebrations.

"The awards play a huge part in celebrating Scotland's literary heritage and the incredible strength of talent displayed by our contemporary writers.

"It is fitting that we applaud this talent on St Andrew's Day - our national day - particularly when this year's winning entries reflect the rich cultural, natural and intellectual heritage of this nation."

Martyn Wade, National Librarian, said: "It has been an honour to host these prestigious awards for the 12th time, recognising the wealth of literary talent Scotland has to offer."

The annual awards have been held for the past 27 years.

SCOTLAND VOTES ROBERT BURNS THEIR GREATEST EVER SCOT.

Scotland's people voted today on ST Andrews Day their greatest ever Scot was Scotland's Son; Robert Burns whom the Scottish people considered their greatest ever Scot which was broadcasted tonight on the STV show named, "Greatest Scot".
In the year of "HOMECOMING SCOTLAND", which was also the 250th year of the anniversary of the birth of Scotland's famous poet the acknowledgment and recognition from the Scottish people only served to broadcast to the World how much the Scottish people recognise their own folk, be they at home or abroad.
From loads of nominee's the selection boiled down to five people from different era's with some surprising results. Many World famous names were considered and mentioned but only five came through the voting to be acknowledged tonight. Those mentioned are the STV viewers choices.

In number five(5) the Actor David Tennant (Doctor Who) was recognised.
In number four(4) Scotland's past football manager Jock Stein was recognised.
In number three (3) the man who is reputated to have saved two billion lives Sir Alexander Flemming.
In number two(2) the hero of Scots for over 500 years William Wallace.

In number one (1) the one and only, World famous Scotland's Son;

THE ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS PARADE IN GLASGOW.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have marched through Glasgow to thank the Scottish people for their support during tours of Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was their first parade in the city since the Royal Scots Greys, their antecedent regiment, left for the South African War in 1899.

There was also a display of armoured vehicles in the city's George Square.

Scotland's only cavalry regiment is back in Scotland for the Year of Homecoming.

The regiment, which is normally based in Fallingbostel in Germany, is carrying out royal guard duties on its first return to Scotland in eight years.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was formed in 1971 from the Royal Scots Greys and the 3rd Carabiniers. The regimental headquarters and museum are still at Edinburgh Castle.

Pipes and drums

Its soldiers have been deployed on all major operations, including the Gulf war, Bosnia and Kosovo.

It was the first regiment in the British army to use the Challenger 2 battle tank and the first to fire its guns against the enemy in Iraq in 2003.

About 150 soldiers paraded through the city along with the Brit Award-winning pipes and drums.

Special guests of the regiment included Glasgow's deputy lord provost and Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy.

The Open Championship
Scotland is recognised as the birthplace of Golf and The Open Championship will provide one of the focal points for the year of Homecoming in 2009. The 138th staging of The Open Championship, golf's oldest major, will find The Champion Golfer of the Year in 2009 at Turnberry. The venue is legendary for golf fans, recalling the famed Duel in the Sun in 1977 when Tom Watson finally triumphed over Jack Nicklaus on the 72nd and final hole of the Championship.

Enjoy Homecoming Day, the final practice day (Wednesday 15th July) at Turnberry and roam the course prior to the start of the famous Open Championship. Try your luck at our Homecoming putting competition or get close to the Claret Jug and give yourself a lasting memory of the day.

The Claret Jug is without doubt the most famous trophy in the game of golf. Commissioned in 1872 but completed in 1873, this elegant trophy – officially called the Golf Champion Trophy – was first presented to Tom Kidd, the 1873 champion, but Kidd was not the first name to be inscribed on it. That honour went to Young Tom Morris, the 1872 champion, even though the trophy had not been completed when he won the event.

The "Return to the Ridings" is a celebration of the riding of the boundaries that has taken place for centuries, in total 11 towns in the Scottish Borders use horses for the traditional ride out and the festivals that surround these ride outs are also steeped in tradition and a celebration of borders history.

Common Ridings can be traced back to the 13th and 14th centuries when the border lands were in constant upheaval during the long wars with England and because of the tribal custom of plunder and cattle thieving, known as reiving (the ancient word for robbing) that was commonplace amongst the major Borders families.
In such lawless times, townspeople would ride their boundaries, or 'marches', to protect their common lands and prevent encroachment by neighbouring landlords. Long after they ceased to be essential, the ridings continued in commemoration of local legend, history and tradition.

Dating back to 1107, Traquair was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland. Later a refuge for Catholic priests in times of terror the Stuarts of Traquair supported Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite cause. HOMECOMING SCOTLAND MUSIC dropped through my letterbox a couple of days ago from a good friend. In the year of the Homecoming Scotland what could be finer than listening to quality Scottish songs and music?

The name of the CD is called "COMING HOME TO SCOTLAND", - what an ideal name in the year of Homecoming Scotland.
Never has such a collection of Scottish songs been written since the "SONG FOR SCOTLAND" contest in the 80's.
The talents of song writer George Mack have been brought alive with the melody writing skills of one of Scotland's top accordionists Jimmy Cassidy.
"COMING HOME TO SCOTLAND" and "TO SCOTLAND THEY'LL RETURN" are songs that will touch the exiles heart strings.
Not many songs have been written about the County of Angus but "THE ANGUS GLENS" is a cracker.
"GOOD OLD ABERDEEN" is a song which I am sure will add favourably to the many songs written about the "Granite City".
"MORAYS MAGNIFICENT MEN" tells of two of Morays most famous sons. "HIGHLAND HIGHWAY" gives a super mini tour of the highlands in song. "PERTHS FAIR CITY", "MY BEAUTIFUL SCOTLAND", "THE TROSSACHS" AND "EDINBURGH" all tell us about the history and beauty of our Country. Then you have a lovely tribute monologue to one of Scotland's greatest entertainers, the late and great ANDY STEWART.

Two miles from Ayr is Alloway. It was here on 25th January 1759 that Robert Burns the famous poet was born. As a child, Robert Burns enjoyed tales of supernatural events and local witch stories. He was to draw on these tales in one of his famous poems ‘Tam o’ Shanter’. The poem describes how Tam disturbs a coven of witches dancing in the local Kirk on his way home late at night. With the witches on his heels, he flees over the 13th Century Brig O Doon. He is only just in time and the witches pull the tail from his horse as he crosses the bridge. The old Kirk and the Bridge are situated on the B7024 from Ayr.

Castle Douglas On the Kelton road there is a little bridge over a stream. A murdered baby was buried in the stream here. Its pitiful crying has often been heard.

There have been several reports of ghostly couples strolling across the roads at night. Several motorists have been horrified, as they have almost crashed into the pair who would disappear at the last moment. A ghostly car has also been reported several times. Again the vehicle is said to drive straight towards an oncoming car causing several accidents, only to disappear at the last moment.
Spedlins Tower
Situated by the river Annan near Jardine A gruesome tale surrounds the haunting of this 16th Century tower. In the 1650s, Alexander Jardine imprisoned a miller for making bad bread, he then took a trip to Edinburgh and consequently forgot the prisoner. He returned to the tower many months later to a sickening sight. The prisoner, who had obviously starved to death, had literally torn his hands from manacles which bound him to the wall, in a desperate attempt to reach the door of the prison. Several people claim to have felt the ‘presence of an unseen entity’ while visiting the tower and some people claim to have seen a tall white haired man in the region of the original dungeon. He looks distraught and in pain, and it is said that this figure has no hands.

FOUNDATION OF DEMOCRACY SHOULD BE RECOGNISED

FEARS UK REFORMS WILL BLOCK WORLD ENTRY
Calls for Arbroath Abbey to be given World Heritage Status are set to be stepped up amid concerns that reform of UK Government procedures could block the bid.
SNP MP Mike Weir will later this week make the plea at the SNP’s spring conference which coincides with UNESCO World Heritage Day (18th April) as it recognises Scotland’s central place in World Heritage.

Sites already recognised in Scotland include St Kilda, the City of Edinburgh, the Antonine Wall, Neolithic Orkney and New Lanark.

Mr Weir believes Arbroath Abbey should receive World Heritage Status for its role in the Declaration of Arbroath – internationally recognised as one of the foundation stones of modern democracies and constitutional politics.

However, a controversial consultation process by the UK Government could result in no further UK sites being put forward for World Heritage status.
Mr Weir, the MP for Angus, said:
“Scotland’s role in world history is acknowledged in the recognition of sites covering the Neolithic, Roman, Enlightenment and Industrial eras. Arbroath Abbey would be a valuable addition to that list.

”There has been an all-party community campaign pushing for the granting of this status and obviously we all have grave concerns about the implications of the UK Government’s review.
“The Declaration of Arbroath has a special place in the heart of Scottish nationalists but it is also internationally recognised as one of the foundations of the American Declaration of Independence.

“Only this week the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath has seen America celebrating Tartan Day as part of a now week long celebration of Scottish heritage and culture.

“The influence of the events that took place at Arbroath on 6th April 1320 and the words of that declaration is a global one. Democracies around the world can find their founding principles in the Declaration of Arbroath.

“In this year of Homecoming it is only right that Arbroath Abbey has the opportunity to win full international recognition as a World Heritage site.

“It is unacceptable that changes to UK Government procedures could mean Arbroath is denied the opportunity to apply for this status.

“This review could mean that no more UK based sites are put forward for World Heritage status or that significantly fewer UK applications are made. For Arbroath to miss out would leave what is a major site in world history without the international protection and recognition it so richly deserves and would only highlight the need for Scotland to be an independent member of UNESCO.”

Having just come back from the beautiful and wild hamlet of Kinloch Rannoch. The road to Kinloch Rannoch is untouched and you immediately take a step back in time, the road to Knloch Rannoch is a photographers paradise, especially if like us you travel via the A93 route. The A93 takes in some of the most breathtaking and beautiful views in the whole of Scotland as the road travels up and over the Cairngorm Mountains. Kinloch Rannoch is a gem tucked away on the B8109 which is North West of Pilochry. We were fortunate enough to stay for two nights in the Dunalastair Hotel where you will find the staff friendly and helpful, our stay was made even better by the excellent chef Dunalastair Hotel have, the presentation and food was cooked to perfection. Oh! so often we have stayed in Hotels Worldwide and found that other guests spoke occassionally, on the "Murder Mystery Weekend" at the Kinloch Rannoch Dunalastair Hotel, the atmosphere was of fun and friendship with everybody. An outstanding weekend which we hope the Dunalastair Hotel will keep alive and kicking as it reflects the image of the friendly and hospitable Scots in the year of Homecoming Scotland 2009.

SCOTLAND WINS HOMECOMING FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD

SNP MSPs have been winning friends for Scotland as part of Homecoming 2009.

MSPs have written to their counterparts in towns and cities across the world that have Scottish namesakes or connections to build links between the towns.

As a result towns and cities in Scotland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and America are now building new connections with possible visits and exchanges in the future.

This has included

· Jamie Hepburn made contact not only with Croy in Switzerland and Kilsyth in Australia but also received a response from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as he connected California in Falkirk to the US State.

· Adam Ingram (South of Scotland) contacted the Mayor in Ayr, Australia and a delegation will be visiting Ayr, Scotland later on in the year

· After contact from Stuart McMillan (West of Scotland) the Mayor of Greenock Australia has asked for information about Greenock Scotland to include in the town newsletter. Mr McMillan has also had a response from Greenock, Ontario

· Fiona Hyslop (Lothians) has established a link with the Mayor of Armadale, West Australia, host of W.A’s largest Highland gathering – who sent back examples of their Armadale tartan and will promote homecoming at the event

· Responses from New Edinburgh in Canada to Shirley Anne Somerville, East Dundee in Illinois to Joe FitzPatrick and Roseanna Cunningham will be welcoming visitors from Perth in Tasmania

THE GATHERING OF THE CLANS 2009 in the year of Homecoming Scotland is one very special occasion. (officially called: THE GATHERING 2009)
The last such gathering was reminiscent of some earlier pageants in the years 1822, 1977 and 1989 which brought many Clans together.
Clans of many famous names have already booked their Clan Tent. This event will be the greatest international gathering, with around 140 different clans in the parade, and 120 clans represented in the tented village at the Highland Games.The massive parade which will march with pride along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh will be viewed by the World's media.
There will be Clan members and their families from all over the world and our feedback is more than positive from all over the World.
HRH The Prince Charles is also titled the Duke of Rothesay, which is the official title to the heir apparent to the throne of the Kingdom of Scotland. A separate Scottish throne has not existed since the Treaty of Union in 1707, which saw the joining of the Kingdom of Scotland with the Kingdom of England to form the Kingdom of Great Britain under Queen Anne.
HRH Prince Charles is the Royal Patron for the Clan Gathering in the year of Homecoming Scotland 2009.

In April 1962, on the A75 between Dumfries and Annan two brothers were traveling along the road in a car when a hen flew towards them and then disappeared just as they were about to hit it. Then followed an old woman, and then great cats, wild-looking dogs, goats, strange creatures and men. All disappeared into thin air when about to make contact with the car.

The John Muir Odyssey 2009

From his birthplace in East Lothian, with an exciting itinerary, by land and sea, this event promises dramatic scenery, spectacular coastline and the amazing wildlife that inspired John Muir. With a programme including: “Muir’s World by Land and Sea”, the "Great Scots Walking Festival" and “Our Wee Planet”, a festival featuring art, music, film, walks, talks and boat trips, it promises to be one of the highlights of Scotland’s Year of Homecoming in 2009.

Set in the heart of John Muir country, in Dunbar and North Berwick, visitors will have the opportunity to experience at first hand what inspired John Muir’s passion for wild places, a legacy that continues across the world today. Visitors will be able to walk on the beaches and in the countryside he loved, visit his home and find out about the influences, as a boy, that would endure throughout his life.

The event is being supported by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS), RSPB Scotland, the Marine Conservation Society and many more. SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY CELEBRATE 250^th ANNIVERSARY OF ROBERT BURNS.

SNP members of the Scottish Parliament are kicking off Homecoming 2009 with numerous Burns celebrations across Scotland.

The group of 47 MSPs will be attending a host of events from Willie Coffey, MSP for Kilmarnock, taking part in the Burns Supper at Kilmarnock Prison to Stuart McMillan MSP, West of Scotland, playing the bagpipes at a local event.

South of Scotland MSP Aileen Campbell has urged her fellow MSPs and people across Scotland to take part in the World Record attempt at the largest simultaneous Burns toast; and John Swinney will toast the lassies at the Perth Burns Club supper.

2009 is the 250^th Anniversary of birth of Scotland’s national bard and Burns Night is kicking off the celebrations that run all the way through to St Andrews Day.

Kilmarnock MSP Willie Coffey said;

“Burns night is one of the highlights of our National Calendar and this year is even more special with it being the 250^th Anniversary of Burns birth and also the start of Homecoming.

WORLDWIDE BURNS TOAST BEGINS.
SNP MSP Aileen Campbell is urging her fellow MSPs and people across Scotland to take part in an attempt for the largest worldwide toast.
South of Scotland MSP Aileen Campbell who will be hosting her own Burns Supper to take part in the world record attempt is encouraging members to spread the word around Scotland for the “Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns”
From this weekend people can register their Toast to Burns to build a worldwide total – then on 25th January there will be an attempt to break the World Record for a simultaneous toast at 9pm (GMT).
Ms Campbell said:
“Across Scotland people will be hosting and attending Burns Suppers over the next few weeks. In this year of Homecoming there will be many celebrations of Burns.
“It would be an extra special tribute if the toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns on the 250th anniversary of his birth could become the world’s largest simultaneous toast.

“The world record is a big challenge but one I am sure people in Scotland and around the world will rise too.
“I’d urge everyone to make sure their suppers are registered for the Worldwide Toast and that anyone holding their Burns Supper on Burns Night raises a glass to toast the immortal memory of Robert Burns at exactly 9pm.
“The toast doesn’t have to take place at a Burns Supper, it just needs to be at 9pm on 25th January so wherever you plan to be you can arrange to take part. Whatever you are doing at 9pm next Sunday - stop and raise a glass to Robert Burns.
“There are some rules for the world record attempt but with 462,572 people holding the current record I would urge everyone to check the rules, to take part and to make sure the Immortal Memory in the year of Homecoming is the worlds largest simultaneous toast.”

An exhibition to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns and the Year of Homecoming, 2009.
Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard, has an unrivalled place in the affections of the people of Scotland. He is also known all over the world. His birthday on 25 January is celebrated in Burns suppers, and the words of his poem ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung in a spirit of reconciliation and friendship at the last stroke of midnight on the last day of every year in every Continent. The poetry of Robert Burns, both in Scots and English, has become an important part of Scottish national identity. His personality, democratic and generous, has also become an ideal for many Scots.
The photographers Ross Gillespie and Tricia Malley have marked the Homecoming celebration by making a series of portraits of prominent Scots and adopted Scots. Each sitter has been asked to respond to a quotation from Burns, and to reflect upon the continued relevance of Burns in modern Scotland.
The resulting portraits and commentaries, brought together in this exhibition, make for a celebration of contemporary Scottish culture, and a reinforcement of the values and aspirations that found their perfect expression in the poetry of Robert Burns.

MAID OF NEIDPATH GHOST.

The ghost of Neidpath Castle is said to be Jean Douglas, the reputed Maid of Neidpath who was born in 1705. The youngest of three sisters, she fell in love with son of the Laird of Tushielaw. When marriage was mentioned, he was sent away as he was considered below her station. However, Jane remained true to her lover and kept watch for his return from the lookout post above the castle gate. Her father relented, and her lover was recalled. Unfortunately, as he passed the gate he failed to recognise her and she subsequently died of a broken heart. Poems by Sir Walter Scott and T. Campbell have been written about the Maid of Neidpath. Her ghost has been observed within the castle and is described as having long black hair and wearing a brown dress with a large white collar. She seems to dislike sounds of merriment within the castle and shows her displeasure by banging doors with one tantrum being said to have lasted three days! She has the ability to pass through whole objects whilst obscuring others. Jean has been seen in the courtyard, along the cherry tree walk, in the laigh hall and her shadow has been seen on the eastern walkway.

The Aberdeen Northern Soul All-Nighter will be organised by the Granite City Northern Soul club one of Scotland's top northern Soul Clubs which has a very large local membership.

The venue is superb for Northern Soul Music as it has a 700 capacity and even if all the patrons are up dancing all at once there's still room on the dance floor for everyone.

Aberdeen Beach Ballroom is run by Aberdeen City Council and is one of the very few remaining wooden sprung dance floors in Europe which makes it ideal for northern soul dancing.

Tickets are priced at £12 and the event starts at 10pm and finishes at 6am.

This event takes place around twice a year usually in April and September and because it attracts Northern Soul members from across the whole of the UK this really is one of the largest Northern Soul events held in the UK and one that is not to be missed if your an Northern Soul fan.

Any one Visiting the Homecoming Scotland 2009 event in either April or September 09 would be made very welcome at these events.

The ruin of Hermitage Castle lies near Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Hermitage has seen many border conflicts between Scotland and England and has a few ghostly tales. The castle was owned by many families including the De Soulis, Douglas, Dacre and Bothwell families. In 1342, Sir Alexander Ramsay was imprisoned by Sir William Douglas and starved to death here. His ghost is believed to haunt the castle. Mary, Queen of Scots rode over fifty miles in one day to visit her wounded lover, the Earl of Bothwell. A regal figure believed to be Mary, Queen of Scots has also been seen at the castle. Lord William De Soulis is reputed to have practised the black arts at Hermitage. Cries, screams and anguished moans are often heard in the vicinity of the castle which is hardly surprising given its troubled past. Click on the graphic for a closer view.

On a small spur of the Eildon Hills there is a strange mark on the hillside resembling a galloping horse and rider. About 200 years ago, a horse trader named Dick Canonbie met up with an old man in out-of-date clothes near this spot who bought his black horse. Several times thereafter, Dick returned to sell him some more black horses, receiving old but precious gold coins. One time he insisted on seeing where the old man lived, and was taken to a huge cave in the hills, which contained many black stalls of coal-black horses, with a knight in black armour seemingly asleep at each stall. He was given the choice of blowing a horn, or drawing a sword, and on this choice depended whether he died or became King of this strange place. He made the wrong choice, and was found next morning on the hills, able to gasp out his story before he died. No trace of the cave has ever been found but a strange mark appeared on the hillside where Dick died - a galloping horse and rider. Some claim to have seen the shape of an old man, and others maintain to have seen black-armoured knights on black horses.

The hotel was originally built about 1845, (although there has been a house on the site for many years), and was home to Lady Grisell Baillie. When the adjacent abbey was still in use, one of the monks in residence had an affair with the young lady of the house. The Abbot, on hearing of the infidelity of his monk ordered that he be killed. The young lady, on hearing of the monk's death, was so distraught that she threw herself into the river and drowned. She became known as the 'Grey Lady'. She has been seen walking across the
chain bridge and in some outbuildings of the hotel. The 'Grey Lady' makes her presence felt most when any changes occur at the hotel and there were many reports of 'strange happenings' during the time when the hotel was closed and the builders moved in. Click on the graphic for a closer view.

With over 300 events already being prepared and many more to come Homecoming Scotland 2009 promises to be very special. With less than three weeks to go before the start of the Homecoming Scotland year, Scotland is getting ready for celebrations from traditional events to modern events, from well known Scottish music to modern pop music. Traditional annual events are being extended and special Homecoming Scotland events are being introduced. The city of Glasgow gets an early start on the 23rd of January by using the Chamber of Commerce building to have on a continual loop to the 25th January historical facts and video interests relating to Scotland and Scotland's people.

HOMECOMING SCOTLAND - THE GHOST OF LOUDOUN KIRK CEMETERY CRYPT.

THE GHOST OF LOUDOUN KIRK CEMETERY CRYPT hidden away in the Irvine Valley situated in Galston Ayrshire shown here has many secrets. Interred here are the ancestors of the Campbell family who once owned the imposing Loudoun Castle. My Grandfather who was one of the gardeners at Loudoun Castle is also interred within the Loudoun Kirk Cemetery.
The Loudoun Kirk Cemetery Crypt sits in a small area approx. 400 square meters in size tucked away in a quiet and beautiful area of Loudoun Kirk which gave rise to it's name from the turn of the century. Once a bustling and busy hamlet of a few houses where family's had geese and hens, fruit trees and most of the menfolk worked the soil or had employment from the local land owners. The single track road which snakes it's way back to Galston from Loudoun Kirk once had seven families sitting next door to one another in traditional family and Hamlet style.
The families have long since moved on but the Cemetery with it's old and creaking wrought iron gates still remain with the Loudoun Kirk Crypt standing just off the centre of the Cemetery grounds. Although very beautiful and picturesque during daylight hours, nobody, and I mean nobody ventures there at night.
To set the scene;
Night time brings a very strange aura to Loudoun Kirk and it was during one of my late jaunts in my youth I was confronted by my first genuine 100% ghost. I was busy looking through the gates with my friend pointing out where roughly my Grandfather was buried trying to see the small headstone in the darkness when in the background we both could see the distinct shape of a Lady with a light blue grey light showing all around her and slowly departing from the Crypt doorway and disappearing into the brick wall (which had no door) surrounding the Cemetery and not walking, simply floating.
The speed of my friend and I reaching Galston that night broke all known records, and we have heard many stories over the years about the well known Grey Lady figure who to this day can be seen either at Loudoun Castle or Loudoun Kirk Cemetery.
My scepticism got truly knocked that night, and since then have seen apparitions on three different places all having the heroic instinct to run, except the last time when it was a little girl which I will add and explain on our Scotland list.

We have been getting many questions asking about places to visit that are said to be haunted while visitors are here for the Homecoming Scotland 2009 Celebrations.

There are thousands of places such as this in Scotland and over the coming months we will try and point you in the right direction to the best known of all of these most famous ones on these Scottish shores.

One of the most Haunted places I have visited has to be Jedburgh Castle Jail & Museum an 19th century Howard Reform prison with a local history interpretation centre and audio tours and is on the site of the Royal Castle of Jedburgh.

ALEX SALMOND - HOMECOMING SCOTLAND 2009 - NEW YEARS MESSAGE.

The Homecoming 2009 initiative - with its 300-plus inspirational events across the country - will help Scotland turn a threatened tourism downturn into a visitor boom, First Minister Alex Salmond says in a special New Year message.

The video message was recorded at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, which is hosting Zig-Zag - Paths of Robert Burns' exhibition until February before it is taken on tour round Scotland for the rest of 2009.

It begins with a view of the original manuscript of Auld Lang Syne, and Mr Salmond saying:

"Written by our very own international cultural icon Robert Burns, Auld Lang Syne is a masterpiece that is sung by hundreds of millions of people around the world to welcome each and every New Year.

"As we know, New Year is a time for family, for reunions, for taking stock, for looking back and looking forward.

"For many people, 2009 will be an enormous challenge, with the full impact of the economic downturn starting to bite.

"At times like this, therefore, it is even more important that we pull together as a nation. The economic storm clouds are gathering. But I know that we will weather this storm - and emerge even stronger, and well placed to prosper.

"That is why we are delivering our economic recovery plan to help families and business - accelerating investment in the economy, and boosting spending on fighting fuel poverty.

"It means more money to support families struggling to pay their mortgage. And it means £70 million available this coming year for local authorities to freeze the unfair Council Tax - putting much needed extra money in people's pockets.

Glasgow City Chambers building is to be used for a giant projection screen narrating the life of our National Bard, Robert Burns. Music will be looped for three nights which will bring us into Burns Night on the 25th January and such a fine kick off for Homecoming Scotland 2009.
The 25th January will be celebrated all over World including Scotland, but for Scotland and Robert Burns memory this promises to be a truly a remarkable year.

Mr Donald Trump has chosen the new name for Menie House on his massive new Scottish golf links development.
Our sources have informed us the new name for the 400 year old plus Menie House is now known as; Macleod House.
The name comes from Mr Trumps Scottish mother Mary Macleod and we feel is a much better name.
The original 400 year old plus building is well known locally for it's famous ghost who haunts the cellars and is known as "The Green Lady", and we are reliably informed by our sources "The Green Lady" is still active. Perhaps the extensive modernization within the building will be enough to sedate the ghost.
Mr Donald Trump is in the process of building, "Quote"; the best golf course in the world". on the grounds of the Menie Estate, North Balmedie where the Macleod House sits.

SPANISH VILLAREAL FOOTBALL FANS VISIT SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT.

SNP MSP for Lothians, Fiona Hyslop yesterday welcomed The Mayor of Vila Real, the Vice President of the Submari Celtic Supporters Club and a group of football supporters to the Scottish Parliament ahead of yesterday's Villarreal Vs Celtic Champions League game.

Visits between the Submari Celtic Supporters Club set up by Villareal supporters and Celtic supporters in Scotland have seen thousands of pounds raised for Children’s charities in Spain and Yorkhill Children’s hospital in Glasgow.

Fiona hosted the welcome Ceremony following a tour of the Scottish Parliament, which saw Fiona exchange gifts and cut a specially decorated cake with the Mayor, which displayed a Vila Real and a Saltire flag symbolising friendship between the fans.

Commenting on the day, Fiona Hyslop said;

“It’s a real honour to host this visit to Parliament ahead of tonight’s match in Glasgow.

“The spirit of friendship shown between the two sets of fans is a real tribute to the ability of sport to bring us together around the world and their contributions to children’s hospitals and charities in Glasgow and in Vila Real are an excellent way to show that friendship.

“Scotland’s fans – whatever team they support - have made many friends around the world and this is an excellent example of the ambassadors our football fans can be.”

The Submari Celtic Supporters Club was established by Ernesto Boixader Gil, whose son died of cancer shortly before the 2004 UEFA Cup quarter final between Villareal and Celtic.

Yesterday’s visit to the Parliament is sponsored by Lothians MSP Fiona Hyslop after two of her constituents, William and Hope Wightman, who take part in the visits and exchanges asked if the visitors could see the Parliament.

HOMECOMING SCOTLAND SPOTLIGHT ON LOUDOUN GOWF CLUB AYRSHIRE.

HOMECOMING SCOTLAND SPOTLIGHT ON LOUDOUN GOWF CLUB AYRSHIRE in the heart of the Ayrshire Irvine Valley nestled between Galston and Newmilns.
The Gowf Club is the only one of it's kind in the world and is over 400 years old. The Gowf Club started life as a pastime for the Campbell family who owned Loudoun Castle which used to be part of the grounds. The course has small burns (streams) running through it which also makes it quite unique. The rough was made to good use by the famous Glasgow football ground, Hampden Park in the 1920's who returfed Hampden with it.
As far back as I can remember the course has always been busy, and today is no exception with the weekends being especially hectic.
A visit by vistors during the weekdays is advised during the year of Homecoming Scotland where it's possible to buy locally produced ladies and gents clothing, enjoy a game of Gowf or have a drink at the nineteenth.
The Loudoun Castle adjoining the Loudoun Gowf Club caters for family's as this is now a theme park designed for the kids.
An hour by car will take you to Robert Burns Cottage (built 1757) and Museum at Alloway from Loudoun Gowf Club so being so close to Burns country you begin to realise why Robert Burns loved the area so much.
A small detour heading for Alloway go via Mauchline where you can visit the Burns Monument which is crammed with Burns memorabilia, not forgetting to try a refreshment in the local alehouse - Poosie Nancies which Robert Burns frequented, and still in use to this day.
This suggestion will allow visitors a nice day out with plenty to see, photograph, and allow time for that souvenir.

ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCILLORS VOTE DOWN SCOTLAND.

It's little wonder Mr Donald Trump had problems with Aberdeenshire Council who are fast gaining a reputation for alienating there voting public.
Aberdeenshire's Council's latest monumental blunder has to be read to be believed; Please note to all who read this; Scotland on the whole is not in the least like the Aberdeenshire Council who are proving to be a law unto themselves.

Aberdeenshire councillors took the extraordinary step last week of voting to keep the North-east's flagpoles empty during the year of Scotland's Homecoming 2009.
Liberal and Conservative councillors joined forces to vote down a proposal from Ellon and District SNP councillor Rob Merson that the council adopt the flag-flying policy as agreed by the former Lib/Lab Scottish Executive.

Councillor Merson argued that with St Andrew's Day just three days away and 2009 being the year of the Homecoming that there was no better time to start flying the Saltire as a way of saying 'welcome' to the visitors which it is hoped will be attracted to the North-east next year.

Conservative member Bruce Luffman proposed that no action be taken citing health and safety reasons and was backed by 36 votes to 24.

Commenting, Cllr Merson said: "I am absolutely astounded by this. Having put forward the exact same policy that the Liberals introduced for the Scottish Executive in 2005, I really thought that this would be approved by the Administration.

"With the 2009 Year of the Homecoming almost upon us, when so many agencies are trying to attract visitors to Scotland next year in these difficult financial times, one of the key symbols of Scottish identity has been banished from our flagpoles.

"Instead of the traditional welcome of putting the flags out for our visitors, it is disappointing that the Tories and Liberals have made it a political issue.

"It is deeply disappointing, and something that the people of Aberdeenshire will remember whenever they see an empty flagpole."
